Katy Perry just dropped the political bop we didn't know we needed...

Kissing girls, shooting fireworks and squirted cream out of her chest and dancing with sharks at the Superbowl - what's not to love about the wonderfully quirky and cartoon-esque Katy Perry?

Pop music has always been intended to be fun, whether it's digging it with Abba or donning a latex catsuit with Britney Spears, yet sometimes in current music it seems as if popular music has lost its personality amongst the swathes of electronic dance.

Katy Perry, from the moment she came crashing onto the radar of chart music, has delivered nothing but fun and all the better for it, it's delivered three fantastic albums full of joyous smashes.

Yet she returns today with the lead single from her first album since 2017, 'Chained To The Rhythm' featuring reggae artist Skip Marley, and with it comes a whole new era of Ms Perry in something she calls "purposeful pop".

It's hard not to cringe at such a phrase, I understand.

Musically speaking, however, it's by far Katy's most brave single to date, at least lyrically. While on the forefront of yet another uptempo, singalong pop song you might think the song is simply about "turning up the music to your favourite song" as she commands you to do, it doesn't take a lot to tear off a layer which reveals a more sinister tone.

"Are we tone deaf? Keep sweeping it under the mat" and "so comfortable, we're living in a bubble" or all metaphors criticising those who are so removed from difficulty in their lives that they fail to leave their bubble in order to see the problems in the world.

If you've seen anything of the US election, you'll know that Katy Perry has been one of the most renowned faces when it comes to supporting Hilary Clinton and she has been since the beginning of the campaign, so it doesn't take a huge leap to understand that this song almost definitely leans into treading political waters.

Slowly, I am coming down from the beautiful cloud that was Tuesday night's @UNICEF Snowflake Ball. First and foremost, I am incredibly grateful to have received the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award from my hero @HillaryClinton. This award will be a constant reminder to get out of my bubble and back into the field to shine a light on issues that matter most, especially to illuminate the plight of vulnerable children who are living without basic human needs and rights. This honor is a starting line, not a finish line, for me, and I am excited for where my new ambition and purpose leads me! I was profoundly moved and thoroughly surprised when Hillary showed up to give me this award. I broke down and wept watching her take the stage. The last time I was in NYC was for Election Night. I left covered in a blanket of sadness and despair because for me, and I imagine others, the results triggered a lot of dormant fears and emotions to the surface. I feared that we were not ever going to see the light of justice or fairness. I felt vulnerable, confused and frightened like a child.  From the outside it probably looks as though I've always had a "voice." Truth is, I have never had one like I have found in the past year. I have a found a new voice, a more determined voice. I grew up sheltered, suppressed and kept silent for fear of giving the wrong answer. I would reveal my poor education. Or I was just scared. Hillary helped me see that we're all in this together, no matter where we come from, what color we are, or what status and education we have or don't have. Hillary lit a fire inside of me that burns brighter and brighter every day, and that fire will NEVER be put out.  Feelings of despair still comes in waves, but now more than ever I am MOTIVATED to fight against social injustice and to promote equality and kindness as best I know how, through my art and influence. I am continually inspired by her strength and how she continues to rise like the Phoenix she is, every time. It's funny, sometimes people who disagree with me just say, "Shut up and sing." Boy, will I do so in a whole new way... next year. Hell hath no fury like a woman REBORN.

Katy herself has as good as confirmed on Twitter that the song is about people needing to wake up and here we see a whole new side of her, ("woke" as she describes it), with lyrics that challenge the listener rather than simply creating empowerment songs that we've all heard time and time again, pedalling the exact same message. You're good enough, guys, you're really good enough!

But to drop the serious message for a moment, we just bloody love the song.

It's not quite as loud and bolshy as some of her past singles like 'Teenage Dream', 'I Kissed A Girl' or 'Roar' but it's one hell of a earworm - we all know Katy knows how to do a chorus that won't leave our head for days on end.

Whether you just wish to listen to the song for a dance or you want to take some meaning from the lyrics, it's up to you but most importantly she's created a disco influenced bop, somewhat in the ilk of recent The Weeknd/Daft Punk work which surely goes down as one of her best singles to date.

Her music has often been referred to do as a "Happy Meal", only this time round, your free toy is that up of a wake up call... and it's a call that we can't stop listening to, you go Katy.
