2016 RECAP: The Best and Worst Red Carpet Moments
As with every year that passes, the celebrity world has seen some incredible looks hitting the red carpet throughout the past 12 months but there's been just as many howlers that don't quite cut the mustard but they're great for us to pick apart.
From Beyoncé bringing along her daughter in a designer gown to Heidi Klum donning her shower curtain, we've scoured our way through the archives to recap our best and worst red carpet looks of 2016.
BEST
BEYONCE & BLUE IVY - MTV VMAs
2016 has been one hell of a year after the chart stopping success of Lemonade but she didn't just leave her successes in the studio, instead bringing them to the VMAs in August. The pale green gown had jaws dropping as it somehow managed to create this sheer effect without sacrificing any class with it. Beyoncé still looks every bit the queen in this Francesco Scognamiglio piece, just as you would expect her to.
The feathered neckline are the show stopping moment of this outfit however, as they add the touch of drama to the outfit that tips it over the edge from being a stunning gown to a real memorable piece that ensured she was the name on everybody's lips from the minute she stepped on the red carpet.
If it wasn't enough that Bey herself was shining at the VMAs however, she brought along daughter Blue Ivy who looked incredible herself. Looking just as at ease as her superstar mother as she took to the red carpet in a similarly theatrical but stunning Mischka Aoki gown, Blue really shone. That's one beautiful family.
BLAKE LIVELY - CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
We could've picked any number of Blake Lively's looks at Cannes Film Festival. She looked every bit the Disney princess in two of her blue dresses during the festival but it was the above gold gown that really brought the glamour and sex appeal in abundance.
Radiating from head to toe during her pregnancy, Blake Lively really has been a style icon this past year with her approach on dazzling whilst showing off her baby bump. This iconic gold Versace gown almost masked any sign that she was pregnant but either way, she absolutely glowed in it, there's no question of that.
That sure is one MILF working the Cannes red carpet. Beyoncé, you've got competition here!
CHARLIZE THERON - OSCARS
You don't always have to throw glitz and glam on a dress to make it a wow moment. This Dior look on Charlize Theron stands out as one of the best of the year because it's just so beautifully fitting and compliments her so well that the whole package just works with ease.
It's a nod to old school Hollywood glam, donning red for the red carpet with a long train to really add to the elegance. However, the daring, plunging neckline allows Charlize to feel at ease with her sex appeal and matched with a sweeped bob, Theron doesn't have to work too hard to be sexy in this.
It's simple but it's stunning and sometimes that's all it takes against looks that can often be trying too hard to hit the headlines.
OLIVIA CULPO - EMMYS
Completely different to the floor hitting gowns that precede this one, Olivia Culpo turned all heads at the Emmy's this year in a dress this gravity-defying number which really does bring the magic.
The former Miss Universe could likely look stunning in a potato sack but the mid length dress is a beautiful touch to a red carpet that is always littered with gowns. This Zac Posen designed dress more than holds it's own though with it's unusual shape that somehow still looks wonderfully flattering.
The small mosaic specks add a real touch of magic to this dress and it's a real stand out of the year for us.
WORST
HEIDI KLUM - OSCARS
As the head judge of US fashion design show Project Runway, it's hard to believe this outfit wouldn't see the contestant behind it sent packing. There's simply nothing flattering about it.
Looking somewhat like she threw on a shower curtain, the way this dress just seems to drape and fall around her doesn't do anything for her shape, nor does it look in any way glamorous. It's simply a dress that just looks like it's made from a textiles store's worth of tulle fabric with some tacky flowers thrown in for good measure.
It's hard to wow in a colour as washed out as lavender as it is - sure enough, she created a talking point with this but absolutely for all of the wrong reasons.
JESS GLYNNE - BRIT AWARDS
We love Jess Glynne and how long, ginger locks but when she rocked up to the BRIT Awards in February with this unkept mane, we think she took it a little bit too far, especially when teamed up with this suit.
The combination of the hair with the emerald brocade suit really is a sight for sore eyes and it doesn't take a genius to draw a comparison between this look & The Wizard Of Oz and we're not sure that that should ever be an inspiration for a red carpet fashion statement.
Sometimes less is more and in this case, that is definitely true. Hopefully, if she gets an invite this year, she can tone it down as there's certainly nothing magical about this wizardry ensemble.
TAYLOR SWIFT
The theme for this years Met Gala was 'Man vs Machine' which led to some interesting looks trying to divulge into metallics, silvers, golds and all things futuristic. Aside from being silver, we think Taylor missed the mark on any futuristic front and whole heartedly missed the mark on any fashion front.
Everything about it is questionable from the print to the cutouts to the silhouettes and that's all without even feasting your eyes upon the bleached crop cut that Taylor Swift attempted to sport in this "edgy" outfit.
We understand Taylor was and still is trying to continue a transformation from the 'good girl of pop' into something a little edgier but this was certainly a step in the wrong direction and straight into fashion's bad books.
KIM KARDASHIAN
Oh, Kim. Always one to push the envelope, Kim Kardashian essentially did the opposite of putting on some outlandish gown with eccentuated her infamous curves when she donned this "vintage Galliano" dress which she described as "wet, beachy glam".
We agree with her on looking wet and beachy but not so much glamorous, more so washed up after a sweaty day sunbathing by the beach on holiday. Absolutely nothing about this dress screams red carpet, which we do love in a way but it's all so unremarkable and lazy that it stands out as being such a bad fashion choice.
Wet hair we can deal with but the off the shoulder fit and the weird toggles dangling beneath her legs just look completely unflattering - we think she should've just returned to that sun lounger and forgotten all about the awards ceremony. We're sure Kanye would've forgiven her.
