It's about time we gave Cheryl and Liam some credit...

Their relationship has made them one of Britain's most talked about couples for the past 12 months

Liam Payne and Cheryl (Tweedy/Cole/Fernandez-Versini - delete as appropriate) seem an unlikely couple, with many raising eyebrows over the 10 year age gap, the fact that Cheryl first met Liam at his X Factor audition when he was just a teenager and most notably, Cheryl's pregnancy. You've probably heard it all.

And on Saturday night, both Cheryl and Liam announced that the baby's arrival via one unbelievably adorable Instagram post of Liam holding the newborn.

Cue the critics. However, I think it's about time we cut the couple some slack.

For months and months, Cheryl has been referred to as "pregnant" by the tabloids as until fairly recently, she failed to confirm her pregnancy, instead leaving people guessing. For this she was criticised, as people thought that she was trying to play with their media and their ongoing speculations.

Now, within hours of announcing the birth of her child, people are already quick to throw out comments such as "I give it a year until they break up" as well as alarming accusations that the reason it took her three days to announce the birth was so that the Westminster disaster didn't overshadow her news.

In reality, there's probably a strong possibility that Cheryl delayed the announcement because she didn't want to seem disrespectful blaring her joy to the world at the same time as Britain cried over a national disaster.

It may seem out of character for Cheryl to try and avoid the headlines but, bar a few appearances for advertising and talk shows, she's kept her face away from the public during almost the entirety of this pregnancy. She hasn't sold stories to journalists for money, she hasn't posted countless Instagram selfies of her bump and she hasn't lauded herself in self importance. Yet, she still seems to rack up undeserved criticism for every thing that she does, seemingly for no reason.

Refreshingly, a friend of the couple spoke out today, telling tabloids: "Cheryl and Liam decided they won't be sharing any pictures as they want to protect the privacy of the baby".

In a celebrity era where we are so accustomed to seeing the Kardashians and countless Z-listers thrust every inch of their private lives in front of the cameras, isn't it about time we respected someone who just wants to keep things private?

Let's get over the age gap, we must have reached the point of saturation in picking holes at that one. We've all seen the audition tape, we've all cringed, but when it all boils down to it, the two of them seem totally genuine in their love for one another.

So, who is to criticise a couple that have just become a happy family? Certainly not us and we wish them the best with a gorgeous new child!
