No, Janet Jackson isn't a 'gold digger'

Janet Jackson has filed for divorce from Wissam Al Mana, after five years. The couple split soon after Janet gave birth to their son, According to People's mag“The cultural differences between her and Wissam became even more obvious [after Eissa arrived]. They come from very different worlds.” Expectedly, the internet has thrown about simply misogynistic rumours regarding money and the timing of the divorce.

Al Mana is a billionaire but Janet Jackson is worth about $175million herself, which by everybody's standards is still incredibly wealthy. People assume that Jackson and Al Mana signed a prenup before their marriage. Most prenups are set up so that one of the partners pay out a specific amount of money. This has caused many to believe that Janet held off filing for divorce until her marriage hit the five-year mark, in order to receive a settlement. The number $500 million has been conjured up by the internet, which seems unlikely.

$500 million is still very steep even for a billionaire, especially after just five years of marriage. Also, what people seem to be forgetting is that Janet Jackson does not need the money. She's incredibly rich and could make more money if she really wanted to - she is an entertainer after all. It seems unlikely that she would get married and then endure a high-risk pregnancy (she had him at 50) for some cash, that she doesn't need. There have even been rumours that Janet magically timed the pregnancy so that it would fit in with the five-year marriage mark.

These types of claims simply would not exist if the situation was the other way round. Not every female, celebrity or not, marries for money and this archaic, pessimistic view really needs to end. The reality of the situation is probably that the two realised that they did not want to be in a relationship anymore. Why do people always assume that money is a contributing factor?
